Iconography is when a symbol or an object can easily be identified , for example the image on the right is Iron man who can be identified by the symbol in his chest. Iconography can also be used to identify other types of genre like superman.

 

However Iconography is not just a term used in media to relate to the things explained here, it is also used in art to describe things like materials, concept and the interpratation of an image.
